Underfloor Heating

  Water underfloor heating:

Man learnt very early to place the kettle filled with water over the fire. It is well-known that heat rises, therefore it is most economical for heating to take place from below.

The feeling of warmth is extremely important. A radiant source of heat, or a draught, is normally felt more intensely than simply low temperatures. Therefore a large heated surface is preferable to a small, intense source of heat.

The combination of radiant heat and gentle convected heat from below is certainly the best solution.  Laying a flexible pipe under the floor has made this method economically feasible. Several litres of warm water circulate in the floor spreading an even heat providing the ultimate feeling of comfort.

There are major benefits when using water for your underfloor heating project. The installation is fast, simple and guaranteed. The water in these pipes can be heated using various methods, e.g., heat pumps, gas burners, solar energy, electricity to name but a few. With underfloor heating, you can position your furniture as you please. There are no wall mounted radiators present to determine how the furniture should be placed, no electrical heaters to drag around. Underfloor heating ensures that there is less dust and the hygienic environment will be improved through minimal thermal air circulation. The ultimate reason for choosing hydronic/water underfloor heating though is undoubtedly the comfort value that is derived from a large surface at relatively low temperature. This ensures that the heating is most efficient, positioned where it is best felt - at your feet. Keeping your feet warm makes your whole body feel warm.

Heating the floor from underneath is nothing new. In fact it was the Romans that first made fire under a raised floor and passed the smoke through a labyrinth of tunnels under each floor to heat from below. Under floor heating is now internationally accepted as a system that achieves the best comfort levels. Using a manifold system heated water is passed through the floor of each room and is controlled by a thermostat to offer room temperature as required. Various heat sources are available. The system is commissioned by trained and accredited installers and is backed by a 10 year warranty.

The design utilizes insulation to ensure that heat loss from the building is kept to a minimum thereby reducing energy required to maintain building comfort when compared with conventional systems. Not every application lends itself to placing pipes under the floor.
